Since the town's founding in 1769, South Main Street evolved into a bustling thoroughfare known for its quaint residential community. North Main Street was once known as the commercial and business district. In the 1960s and 1980s, local organizations sought to revitalize the St. Charles downtown area. Visitors today can admire the original Main Street buildings and architecture that have been painstakingly and lovingly restored. In 1970, South Main Street was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
